Testing for Increased Risk of Breast or Colon Cancer
Do you have family members that have had colon or breast cancer? Ever wonder if you have the genetic predisposition to have the same cancers? We can help.
We offer Myriad® hereditary genetic testing for Breast Cancer.
Approximately seven percent of breast cancer cases are caused by mutations in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes. Individuals who carry a mutation in either the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene have an 87 percent risk of developing breast cancer by age 70. Myriad® testing offers us a way to identify patients who are carriers of a BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation.
We offer Myriad® hereditary genetic testing for Colon Cancer.
Lynch syndrome is the most common cause of hereditary colon cancer. About 3%-5% of colorectal cancers are believed to be caused by mutations in the MLH1, MSH2, MSH6 , PMS2 or EPCAM genes. When a patient carries a mutation in any of these genes, he/she has a condition called Lynch syndrome, also known as Hereditary Non-polyposis Colorectal Cancer (HNPCC) syndrome. Myriad® genetic testing allows us to identify patients who are at higher risk of developing colon cancer.
As with all genetic testing, there are certain criteria that determine if you are a candidate for the test. If you would like to know if either of these tests are appropriate for you, please contact our office at 210-305-5075.
